Projects - Lighting a Water Garden

Lighting a Water Garden

Both still and moving water can be greatly enhanced by lighting. There are several different types of light, each of which serves a different purpose. The simplest is the spotlight that will illuminate a specific area of feature with a single beam. Multiple units of two or three lights are also available and ideal for illuminating large features. White light is the most effective, but there are also coloured lenses, which give amber and red glows.

There are many discrete ways of lighting a water garden.
Underwater lighting is similar, but manufactured in sealed units. These are usually positioned directly beneath a fountain or waterfall for the best effect, although they can be used anywhere in the pond. Floating lights are similar, but much more versatile, although all depend upon an electricity supply close at hand. Illuminated fountains with integral lights are also popular. These provide a great evening spectacle, but in the daytime the fountain returns to a conventional arrangement. Such fountains are usually sold as kits, comprising a submersible pump with fountain attachment and a sealed underwater lamp which is attached to the pump. Some kits also have a colour changer unit that has different coloured lenses.

Only use specially manufactured lights in the garden.
This revolves as the pump is in action giving periodic colour changes. When selecting pond lighting it is essential that only purpose-designed outdoor and underwater lighting is used and the manufacturer’s instructions are strictly followed. Garden lighting should operate through a transformer that is linked to the normal domestic electricity supply. The transformer reduces the voltage to a safe level.
This means that the cables can be run across the garden if necessary, being carefully concealed by plants. This is very useful as it permits adjustments to be made without disruption. No underground wiring is necessary, unless the transformer is housed in another building away from the house. The lamps can be fitted anywhere along the cable and are completely portable.
